Description
In the MWE file provided, when using the optionmath=fp everything is fine, but when using math=pfgmath in the log file, it appears
´ ABD: EveryShipout initializing macros
./file.tex:10: Dimension too large.
<to be read again>
=
l.10 ...olumn{scores}{Assignment 1}{\averagescore}
%
I can't work with sizes bigger than about 19 feet.
Continue and I'll use the largest value I can.
And if I also uncomment the next line (\DTLsdforkeys{scores}{Assignment 1}{\stdev}) it will appear one "2" in the output file.

\documentclass{article}
%\usepackage[math=fp]{datatool}
\usepackage[math=pgfmath]{datatool}
\DTLloaddb{scores}{sample-student-records.csv} % this data file may be found in http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/datatool/samples
\begin{document}
\DTLmeanforcolumn{scores}{Assignment 1}{\averagescore}%
%\DTLsdforkeys{scores}{Assignment 1}{\stdev}

\end{document}
Evaluation
This is a limitation of the pgfmath library not a bug in datatool, so unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it (other than add a note in the manual that there are different drawbacks to the available libraries).
